As you know reading is a major initiative at our school.  This summer we encourage you to get your children involved in a reading program.  There are several locations here in Blacksburg to serve all of our students and we hope that you will take advantage of one or all of them.

St. John’s Methodist Church has a reading program on Tuesday from 11:00 – 12:00.

Blacksburg Primary School has the bookmobile come by on July 17, August 1, and August 14 from 10:30 – 11:15 a.m.

Remember that the public library is also open and has on-going programs.  You can call the public library for a schedule at 864-839-2630.

Also, use your smart phone to download Level It Books app to help your child continue reading on the correct reading level over the summer.

MEDICATION

At the end of the school year all medications (prescription and over the counter) must be removed from the clinic.  This can be accomplished in one of two ways:

1) Parent will pick it up and take it home.

2) The nurse will destroy and dispose of it on the last day of school.  Even though your child may still take the medication NEXT school year, it cannot remain in the clinic over the summer.

CHANGE OF MEDICATION POLICY

The medication policy will be changing for the 2012-2013 school year.  Our nurse can no longer accept a labeled bottle as the “prescription”.  A writtin prescription from the physician must accompany the medication OR the Cherokee County Authorization for Medication Administration (found on the web site or the school nurse can provide it).

*Remember that the pharmacy keeps the prescription: you will need to ASK them to make a copy.

REQUIRED CHANGE FOR THE 2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR:

SC DHEC is providing important information in advance of a future immunization requirement.  This requirement does not apply to the 2012-2013 school year but will begin with the 2013-2014 school year.

*One (1) dose of Tdap vaccine (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) administered on or after the 7th birthday will be required for all seventh graders.  It is strongly recommended that adolescents who have not yet received a dose of Tdap vaccine be immunized in advance of this requirement.
