WHERE'S CODY?

This year student's in Mr. Smalley's 5th grade art classes created packing tape figure sculptures. Each class voted on a male member of the class to become the "model" for their group sculpture. "Cody" is the product of Mrs. Sossamon's 2008-09 5th grade class. During the course of the project, students began to question where "Cody" was going to be placed and what could he really do besides collect dust while on display in the hallway. Several of the students began to ask, "Why can't Cody be a part of our class? Why can't he do what we do...go where we go?" Since we here at Corinth encourage students to think outside of the box we thought that was a great idea. And so "Where's Cody" was born; the braintrust of a handful of preteen artists.

"Cody" can be seen around Gaffney and at any extracurricular activity in which students take part. Be sure to check back often to catch up with "Cody" and all of his adventures with the students and faculty here at Corinth Elementary!

FIRECRACKER JAZZ BAND

On Tuesday, February 3, "Cody" accompanied 5th grade students to the Cherokee County Arts Council's presentation of the Firecracker Jazz Band. Below is a student account of the trip.

On our 5th grade fieldtrip to Limestone College, we saw the Firecracker Jazz Band. When we first arrived at the auditorium, Cody went on stage. Our teacher (Mrs. Sossamon) took several pictures! I'm sure Cody enjoyed the band just like everyone else did.

When the band started playing, everyone wanted to clap along. They played several songs. Most of them were fast and a few were slow songs. It was very bright on the stage and very hot where we were sitting. The band used a lot of different instruments. We all had a really good time.

2009 ARTS EXPO

March 19, 2009, "Cody" enjoyed a trip to Gaffney High School for the annual Cherokee County Arts Expo. While at the Expo, he was able to view some incredible artwork by students from every school in Cherokee County. "Cody" spent a lot of time explaining just exactly what he was and how he and the other tape casting sculptures were made. Members of CAVA (Cherokee Alliance of Visual Artists), a local arts organization, selected the tape sculptures "Gregger", by Mr. Horton's 5th grade class, and "Josh", by Mrs. Propst's 5th grade class, for an upcoming exhibit. "Cody" was asked to be a part of the downtown exhibit, but declined in order to stay with his friends at Corinth. If you didn't get a chance to see the great student work on display at the Arts Expo, "Cody" would like you stop by the CAVA gallery, in downtown Gaffney, and take time to view some great student selections!
